Women`s Programs

Women's Empowerment:

Our women's groups run in two areas of Huaycan: Zone Z and Zone S. These groups, consisting of 12-20 women, meet on a bi-monthly basis for educational workshops. Workshop topics have ranged from nutrition, domestic violence to artisan skills. Within our women's empowerment group, we created an Aristan Project.

These groups get to experience field trips as well--taking them on retreats or to visit musuems in Lima.

Spanish Literacy:

The typical level of education of the women in our program ranges between no formal schooling to completion of the fifth grade. We hold classes specifically for women on how to read and write. Obtaining these basic skills increases women's self-esteem and their status in the community. A higher level of education can lead to more lucrative work and help improve the educational opportunities of their children.

English:

English is an increasingly valuable skill in the Peruvian job market. Some of the women in Huaycan speak both Spanish and Quechua; adding basic English can help them sell their crafts in the marketplace, stand out as a job applicant or possibly the most important, help their children with homework.

We currently hold classes in Zone D and Zone Z.

Computer Skills:

Computer skills are only becoming more vital in the workforce. Women need these skills to compete in the Peruvian job market. LLI's computer classes start with the basics: turning on the computer and learning to type. Classes will soon build up to teach how to use Microsoft Office and how to navigate the internet.
